Well Child Exam Q&A

What is a well-child exam?

A well-child exam involves a comprehensive look at your child’s overall health and wellness. The Harrison Medical Group team tailors each visit to fit your child’s age and specific health needs. Well-child examinations are routinely scheduled appointments when your child isn’t sick.

Your child starts well-child exams as an infant and continues visits up until young adulthood. The examinations help track your child’s health, in addition to:

  • Helping your child build trust with their doctor
  • Updating vaccinations
  • Identifying any signs of illness
  • Assessing for developmental or cognitive disorders
  • Educating them on healthy habits
  • Determining their need for specialty services, as needed

Your child’s provider keeps their health records on file, which serves as a reference point at each visit.

How often does my child need a well-child exam?

Harrison Medical Group goes by the recommended schedule suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the first three years of life, which includes well-child exams at the following ages:

  • Two weeks
  • One month
  • Two months
  • Four months
  • Six months
  • Nine months
  • 1 year
  • 15 months
  • 2 years
  • 30 months
  • 3 years

When your child turns four, they should have annual wellness exams, preferably before school starts.

What can my child expect at a well-child exam?

The team at Harrison Medical Group creates a welcoming environment for your child. During the exam, your provider focuses on your child’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The exam involves:

  • Checking your child’s height, weight, and vital signs
  • Assessing their hearing, vision, and coordination
  • Looking in their ears, nose, mouth, and back of the throat
  • Listening to their lungs, heart, and stomach
  • Observing their motor skills
  • Collecting blood and urine samples, as needed
  • Evaluating their developmental and emotional health
  • Updating vaccinations, as needed

The team can also identify developmental and cognitive health issues like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, or learning disabilities.

As your child continues to grow and develop, the team at Harrison Medical group encourages your child to ask questions and to communicate openly about anything they’d like to discuss.

From the first visit to the last, a well-child visit serves as a safe place for you or your child to talk about any concerns, including information about safe-sex practices, depression, anxiety, and more.
